To the godly single lady: Define your dress sense

Hi lovelies,

I am so elated right now! It’s getting more interesting and it gives me so much joy to do this again this week. Feel free to share the good news to as many ladies as possible. I celebrate you already!

So last week, I wrote on the 4th tip; what makes a woman spiritual.

Today, we would be sharing a yet important tip that is quite impressionable as godly ladies, who must do excellently in a time like this!

Define your dress sense!

Have you ever observed that when you walk into a new environment, people observe everything about you?

However, before you utter a word, your dress alone tells a lot about you. Your appearance is the first thing most persons observe.

Your appearance refers to your clothes, footwear, hairstyle, characteristic scent, facial expression, gait, charisma, speech mannerism etc. Hence, these parameters are largely descriptive.

Emphatically put, your dress sense is largely informative, as your appearance is largely descriptive.

Nevertheless, for the sake of emphasis, I’d rather we consider the subject of dress sense. I might consider the subject of appearance, much later (if God permits me).

This subject of defining your dress sense is indispensable as this is what places you on a somewhat common ground with other ladies (unbelievers alike)

Since. there needs to be a difference, It shouldnt be exclusively restricted to the way you smile, and say Amen! (winks).

Hence, it has many implications to you as a godly single lady.

The modern era, captured from the prehistoric times have got diverse concepts of the nomenclature and practice of ‘dress sense’

The degree of dynamism becomes more pronounced across various tribes in the local and international communities. Changing times accompany changing modes of dressing.
As Christian ladies, we are meant to reflect the person and character of Jesus Christ (our model) in every aspect of our lives, including our patterns of dressing!

N/B : This write-up is not categorically aimed at promoting the cause of a particular mode of dressing over another. Its aimed at exposing to us, the will of the Father on this subject.

One may ask, dress sense is only physical and has little or no impact in pursuing Christ-likeness. However, I wish to submit to you that your dress sense is not merely physical and should not be relegated to the background for a number of reasons, including:

  • Your dress tells a whole lot about you
  • it gives a faster ‘first impression’ about your personality than you think
  • Your dress sense can boost or break your confidence
  • Your choice of dressing is often influenced by occasion, weather conditions, festive seasons, mood and physical activity
  • Your dressing can attract all classes of people or repel them
  • Sometimes, dressing decode the level of our preparedness, dedication and duty
  • People have gained certain privileges, opportunities, rejection on account of their dressing

A popular saying goes like this “You dress the way you wish to be addressed”

A lot of sincere Christian ladies have neglected this important tip and today we are going to see some bible verses that emphasizes Christ-likeness in your dressing

Bible verses Illustrating Modesty and Decency

1 Timothy 2:9 & 10 (New Living Translation)

And I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes.  For women who claim to be devoted to God should make themselves attractive by the good things they do.

Proverbs 7:9-11 (King James Version)

In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.(She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:

1 Peter 3: 3-4 (King James Version)

Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

1 Samuel 16:7 (New King James Version)

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Proverbs 31:30 (New King James Version)

Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.

1 Corinthians 12: 21-2 (King James Version)

And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.

Romans 13:14 (English Standard Version):

But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Below are certain factors to be considered in choosing your dresses in your every day venture:

1. Faith

Different denominations across different nations have several expectations and ideologies of the dress sense of an average Christian lady. Fortunately, this has been greatly helpful for the purposes of identification and decorum in the body of Christ.

However, the godly single lady must seek to understand personally the inclinations of the Holy Spirit and as such grow in so much capacity as to sustain convictions related to her dress sense.

Simply put, your beliefs about your choice of clothing must originate from your convictions based on a personal dealing with Jesus Christ.

2. Modesty

Modesty is an biblical  factor to be considered in your choices! This is particularly important in our dispensation where some ladies pay little or no attention to their outward appearance in the name of being inwardly holy.

As impressive as this sound, you should understand that to know that the intents of your heart are often reflected on the outside.

Even when you are on a spiritual fast, the Bible recommends that you wash and anoint yourself !

It is vain to appear  physically haggard and hair unkempt, as that is a major  far-cry from godliness!

Additionally, there is no gain derived from sensual exposure of your God-given curvatures, in a bid to appear sassy!

This is not only sensual but out rightly unnecessary in portraying the Christ that we confess

The right orientations as given by the Holy Ghost, as you grow in Christian maturity and transformation will always reflect on the outside!

Dear lady, permit me to ask you this question.

How do you identify a mad man on the streets?

Do you examine him medically?

Do you ask him if he is sane?

The answer is NO! His dressing is the first thing to consider!

Hence, do not be quick to assume that your outlook is inconsequential!

3. Smartness

Smartness often depicts a sense of readiness, aptness and alertness.  Mediocrity is not  spirituality. Spirituality is not a call to mediocrity. To be smartly dressed as a Christian lady  is important. Wearing fitting shoes, dresses that match your physique, combining colours and designs fittingly are the worthy indices.

1 Corinthians 14:40

Let all things be done decently and in order.

This includes your mode of dressing!

4. Motive

Behind every dress is a motive or a purpose. Your dress as a Christian lady should match the  occasion for which it is being worn. Primarily, it should be worn to glorify Jesus Christ.

5. Comfort

What’s the use of clothes in the absence of comfort? Apart from a covering of the private body parts. Clothes were meant to offer comfort and support to the wearer. All of these factors play a major role in your life as a godly single lady.

Dear lady, just before you put on that dress, could you kindly respond to the questions below:

  • Based on the God’s dealings for my life, is this dress for me?
  • Will it glorify Jesus; will it result to me taking the credit?
  • What is my aim for wearing it, Is it a silent motivation for me to show off my finely-shaped contours, just a little?
  • Will it constitute a distraction, attract unnecessary attention, or induce a lack of concentration?
  • Does it look, nice, smart and modest enough?
  • Is my cleavage  exposed?
  • I am quite skinny and petite, Is the dress too revealing still?

Kindly re-examine that dress. A godly lady with a sincere desire to please God will surely find answers to the questions she seeks for?

As a woman, you are a spiritual being. Your appearance alone carries an atmosphere. Truly, this is because you have the spirit of God in you, its much more magnificent.

You carry the presence of God, because your body is a temple. A temple has partitions, of which some are private, sacred and restricted to unauthorized persons.

Your body need not be a tourist center! Therefore glorify God in it.

I’d love it if you could revisit your wardrobe again, and reassess your clothing! Allow God to work to sort out your clothes. He knows you better than anyone, and as such He knows the best for you!

Philippians 4:8

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

I plead with you to yield to His promptings. God bless you!

Thank you so much!
